Wardogs launch screen illustrating an anti-cheat startup error

Wardogs Elytra Anti-Cheat Error: How to Fix It

Fix Wardogs launch and Elytra anti-cheat errors with a short checklist: full restart, Steam launch, file verification, drivers and more.

If Wardogs will not start, or throws an anti-cheat error before you reach the menu, the cause is usually the Elytra anti-cheat failing to load. The good news is that most cases clear up with a short list of fixes. Work through them in this order.

Know which anti-cheat you are dealing with

Wardogs uses a kernel-level anti-cheat that Steam lists as Elytra. Older articles and some early coverage mention Easy Anti-Cheat, but the game has moved on. If a guide tells you to repair Easy Anti-Cheat for Wardogs, it is out of date, so skip it.

The anti-cheat driver loads with Windows, which explains why closing and reopening the game often changes nothing.

Fixes to try, in order

  • Fully restart Windows. Not sleep, not just closing the game. A full restart reloads the driver, and it is the step people skip most.
  • Launch from Steam. Start the game through your Steam library rather than a desktop shortcut to the executable. Going around Steam can skip the anti-cheat startup it triggers.
  • Verify your game files. In Steam, right click Wardogs, open Properties, go to Installed Files and select verify integrity. A half finished patch is a common cause.
  • Repair the anti-cheat files. Some players delete the Elytra folder inside the install directory and then run file verification so Steam restores it. If you try this, only touch that one folder.
  • Update your graphics drivers. Crashes during shader compilation are widely reported. After updating, verify files again and let shaders rebuild.
  • Remove conflicting software. Overlays, old anti-cheat leftovers, and other low level tools can stop a kernel driver from loading. Close or uninstall anything you do not need.
  • Check your Windows version. The game requires 64 bit Windows 10 or 11.

Linux and Steam Deck

The game is currently listed as broken on Linux and SteamOS because of Elytra, and the Deck has no compatibility rating. Workarounds circulate online, but they can leave you with a game that fails to connect, and tampering with anti-cheat files can put an account at risk. Wait for official support.

When nothing works

Collect what you have tried, your Windows version and the exact error text, then contact the game’s support. Early Access builds change often, so an error that persists after a clean restart and file verification may be a bug the developers need to fix.

If you use third party software alongside the game, keep in mind that driver conflicts and ban risk are separate issues. Our piece on Wardogs anti-cheat explained explains the second one in detail.
